VIGNETTE PART 6
This study started with wanting to dig into just how Struzan builds out his scenes or key figures within the montage.
The poster below from Struzan kicked off one of the concepts that seemed to ben an answer:
The mini scene within the montage uses shape welding with the darks, to link the characters with the background - and the fire to silhouette them:
Using the poster above as a starting point. I looked to this poster - specifically at the mini scene of the biker below:
As in this poster, the scene of the biker is connected to the key art through shape welding in the blacks in the shadows and the lower wheels:
As an inverse, the top subjects build from the top down: black to whole images of faces:
Same with Indiana Jones’s feet coming out from the blacks: building out from the bottom up
In Struzan’s poster for Congo: the volcano, the gorillas, and the boat mini scene all shape-weld in the blacks from below to build out the scenes from the bottom-up:
More examples:
In Struzan’s Harry Potter poster: Two of the mini scenes (the students in the boats, and Hogwarts) are built out with negative space.
The boats build from the bottom along the black border:
And Hogwars builds from the bottom up from the blacks in the border:
A similar technique is used in Struzan’s The Jungle Book:
The mini scene on the left builds out from the bottom up:
And the mini scene of the palace builds out from the bottom up:
